Students Surprise Their Teacher With A Gift, Inspired By What He Wears Every Day

A high school class in Charlotte, North Carolina, brought their teacher to tears with a small but thoughtful gift.

One of the students filmed the moment, and it went viral, but there was one more surprise no one saw coming.

Students in Jeff Swicegood’s senior English class at Providence High School secretly came together to do something special for him. Pooling their own money, the class bought Swicegood a new pair of plaid Vans — his favorite shoe brand — and presented them to him during class.

A student captured the moment in a video shared on TikTok, where Swicegood can be seen staring at the bag in disbelief, wiping away tears, and sitting down to collect himself.

The clip quickly went viral, racking up more than 11 million views and 2.5 million likes.

“It caught me by surprise, and it blew me away,” Swicegood, 42, told The Charlotte Observer. “It was just like, ‘Wow, someone thought of me.’”

The moment carried extra meaning for Swicegood, who has faced a difficult few years. He recently lost his mother, Margaret, to metastatic breast cancer after caring for her during the nine weeks between her diagnosis and passing. He also lost his father to cancer when he was just 8 years old.

“It just hit me because it has taken this long to get where I am,” he said. “I’m all about family… I don’t have kids of my own, but these kids are my kids.”

The viral moment even caught the attention of Vans itself.

The company commented on the video, calling it “unbelievably precious,” and then surprised the students by giving the group of seniors a shopping spree — including gift cards so they could each pick out their own pair of Vans.
