A hero chose to remain anonymous after saving a woman and her infant child after they crashed into a Houston-area bayou on New Year's Day.
ABC13 Houston
A 22-year-old mother and her 8-month-old baby are recovering after their minivan crashed into Dickinson Bayou Thursday night, according to officials. The incident happened around 9:40 p.m. as the woman was driving along FM 517.
Authorities say the mother told first responders she struck a curb on a bridge, lost control of her vehicle, crossed several lanes of traffic, and plunged into the bayou. What could have been a devastating outcome took a hopeful turn almost immediately.
Officials say a homeless man who lives in a wooded area near the bayou witnessed the crash. Without hesitation, he paddled his canoe out to the submerged vehicle and rescued both the mother and her baby, bringing them safely to shore. By the time they reached land, Dickinson police officers had arrived at the scene.
The Dickinson Volunteer Fire Department also responded and later used their boat to transport a tow truck driver out to the minivan so it could be secured and removed from the water.
The mother and her infant were taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch in League City as a precaution. Police later confirmed that both have since been released from the hospital and are expected to be okay. Investigators noted that neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the crash, and the baby was properly secured in a car seat at the time.
In a statement, the Dickinson Police Department thanked the Good Samaritan for his “quick and selfless actions.” The man, hailed as a hero by officials, chose to remain anonymous.
