December 15, 2025
A raccoon’s unexpected night out has been the gift that keeps on giving.
The now-famous critter from Richmond went viral after breaking into a liquor store and creating chaos inside. When police arrived to check on the break-in, they found the unlikely culprit passed out in the bathroom. The raccoon was unharmed, but the photo shared by Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter quickly spread across social media—launching the animal into internet stardom.

Rather than let the moment fade, the shelter found a creative way to turn laughs into lasting impact.
Working with custom apparel company Bonfire, Hanover County Animal Protection released limited-edition merchandise inspired by the viral moment. The collection features the phrase “Trashed Panda,” a playful twist on the nickname often used for raccoons.
Proceeds from the merch go directly to supporting the shelter’s work.

Alongside the fundraiser, the shelter shared why the support matters, noting that while the raccoon’s story brought joy, their officers respond to hundreds of calls each year involving wildlife, stray animals, and emergencies that require specialized training and equipment.
So far, the “Trashed Panda” merchandise has raised more than $250,000 for the shelter—and the total is still climbing.
Sometimes, even a mischievous raccoon can make a serious difference.
