'My Heart Just Dropped': Tampa Bus Driver Saves Wandering Child

October 9, 2025

What began as a typical afternoon route for Tampa school bus driver Barbara Baker quickly turned into a life-saving moment she’ll never forget.

Back in August, Baker was driving her usual route when something unusual caught her eye—a tiny figure moving along a residential street near a busy road.

“Look at the baby walking in the street by himself. Oh, my God,” she recalled saying to herself.

At first, she thought she might be mistaken. But as she looked closer, she could see the small shoes and pajamas.

“I looked again and seen the shoes, the pajamas, and I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s a baby.’ My heart just dropped,” she said.

As she walked the sidewalk trying to locate his parents, the child kept repeating one heartbreaking word: “Momma, Momma, Momma.”

The moment hit home for Baker, who thought about her own grandchildren.

“I wanted to cry, because I thought about my grandbabies, and I’m like, ‘Oh, cars are passing, and no one is helping the baby in the road,’” she said.

Police arrived soon after and discovered the toddler had wandered two and a half blocks from home. Thankfully, officers were able to reunite him with his family.

“It makes me want to cry. Now I feel a little emotional, but knowing the baby is home, that’s the big thing for me,” Baker said.

According to Hillsborough County officials, all school buses in the area are designated as “safe spaces,” and drivers like Baker receive training to recognize and respond to emergencies just like this one.

Because of her alertness and compassion, a little boy made it home safely—and a community gained another everyday hero.
