Shaquille O’Neal Gifts College Wrestler A Car So She Never Misses Practice Again

September 4, 2025

For most college athletes, getting to practice is just part of the routine. For Tamara “The Firefly” Humphries, it was a daily struggle. The 18-year-old standout wrestler at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown had the drive, the talent, and even a full-ride scholarship — but she didn’t have a car.

Without reliable transportation, Tamara often faced challenges making it to practices and tournaments. All summer, she worked shifts at a local restaurant to save up for her first car, determined to make it happen.

That’s when NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal stepped in.

After discovering her story on social media, Shaq reached out directly to Tamara and her family. Instead of letting her continue to worry about how she’d get to training, he surprised her with the ultimate gift: a brand-new SUV.

For Tamara, the moment was overwhelming.

“I’ve never had a car, ever,” she said. “Unreal. That’s how it was. That’s amazing. Those are the only words I can use for it.”

O’Neal also sent along a video message packed with encouragement — and a playful warning: “You keep body slamming people, you keep listening, and you keep your grades up. I love you. And no boys. Stay away from them boys.”

Known as one of Pittsburgh’s brightest young wrestling stars, Tamara started her journey competing against boys in high school, where she took her lumps early but never gave up. Her persistence has turned her into a fierce competitor with Olympic dreams — and now, thanks to Shaq, she’ll never have to miss a practice or tournament again.

“I’m going to keep the journey going, live for everybody, and we’re all going to do this together and get some Olympic titles,” Tamara said.
