Mechanic Uncovers Scam Against Single Mom — Then Becomes Her Hero
August 28, 2025
When single mom Annette walked into Royalty Auto Service in Georgia, she thought she was just getting a second opinion.
What she got instead was a miracle.
Annette had been told by another shop that her 2010 GMC Terrain needed a brand-new engine. Already stretched thin financially, she was terrified of what that meant for her and her two daughters. But when shop owner Sherwood Cooke and his team inspected the vehicle, they quickly discovered she had been misled.
The SUV was in rough shape—bad wheel bearings, worn tires, rattling timing chain—but it was still running. Worse yet, the warranty Annette had paid $2,000 for wouldn’t cover even the most dangerous repairs.
“This vehicle is falling apart,” Sherwood explained. “She needs new transportation. It’s not worth putting more money into.”
Instead of sending her back out the door, the Royalty Auto Service crew decided to step in. They fixed the immediate safety issues—replacing wheel bearings and unsafe tires—so Annette and her daughters could stay safe on the road. Then they went one step further: they launched a fundraiser to get her into something reliable.
The response was overwhelming.
Within hours, donations began pouring in from across the country—and even from Canada. People connected to Annette’s story, wanting to give her and her daughters a chance at stability.
“We hit the original goal!” Sherwood announced in amazement. “We’ve raised it to see if we can do life-changing stuff for this family. We are overwhelmed by the support and want to see if we can get her enough money to put a down payment on a house and get her out of the apartment that she struggles to pay rent on.”
GoFundMe
By the time the fundraiser closed, nearly 4,000 donors had contributed more than $165,000—enough not just for a reliable car, but to give Annette and her daughters a fresh start.
“This woman hasn’t asked for anything. She is extremely humble,” Sherwood said. “Y’all are literally changing this family’s life!”
What started as one mechanic refusing to let a struggling mom be taken advantage of turned into something much bigger: a community of strangers proving that compassion still wins.
