Shelter Dog Senses Medical Emergency In Stranger During Adoption Event

June 16, 2025

Today's good news story comes from Rustburg, Virginia.

During a recent adoption event hosted by Friends of Campbell County Animal Control, a quiet moment turned into a stunning display of intuition — and heroism — by a shelter dog named Sienna.

Sienna had been calmly greeting visitors, tail wagging and soaking up attention like any sweet, adoptable pup might. But then something unexpected happened. Without being called or coaxed, Sienna gently walked away from the crowd and approached a man she had never met.

What happened next stunned everyone.

As Barbe Shackleford, Director of Friends of Campbell County Animal Control, explained, "Sienna walked over to a man, very deliberately. She had not met him before. She paused, sat down beside him, put her paw on his foot, and just sat there. It was a couple of minutes later she started pawing at his leg, and his wife came around the corner and said, ‘Oh my goodness. This means he’s probably going to have a seizure.’ He had some medical problems, and one of the signs was that he got very still."

The man had a history of seizures, and thanks to Sienna's incredible intuition, his wife was able to act quickly. She promptly helped him to their car, ensuring he had shade, rest, and air conditioning. The woman later shared her astonishment with volunteers, noting that her own three dogs had never exhibited such a pre-seizure warning.

The shelter shared in a Facebook post:

"This is the kind of magic that shelter dogs carry inside them—unspoken wisdom, deep empathy, and an unfailing ability to connect with us in our most vulnerable moments. Sienna wasn’t trained to do this. She simply felt it."

While the family, due to already having three dogs, is unable to adopt Sienna, they were eager to share her story in the hope of helping her find a loving home. Since her heroic moment, Sienna has already received two adoption applications, and generous individuals have even volunteered to cover her adoption fee.

It seems Sienna's heartwarming act of heroism has not only saved the day but also paved the way for her own bright future.
