May 23, 2025
Today's good news story comes from Muskogee, Oklahoma.
City of Muskogee Animal Control Supervisor Phil Blair is known for his dedication to animals, but his quick thinking this week took that commitment to a whole new level—saving the life of an unborn baby deer after a tragic accident.

Blair was called to the scene of a deer struck by a car. Upon arrival, he found the mother deer had suffered four broken legs and sadly had to be put down to prevent further suffering.
As he and his colleague approached the scene, they noticed unexpected movement in the deer’s abdomen. Realizing the deer was pregnant, Blair sprang into action.
“I rushed to the truck, grabbed my gloves and a knife, and got it out,” Blair said. “I knew it wouldn’t survive if I didn’t do something.”
Although Blair isn’t a veterinarian, his lifetime of experience with animals and his calm under pressure made all the difference. The newborn initially struggled to breathe, but Blair cleared its nose and gently wiped it down. Soon, the fawn began to cry out and even tried to stand—signs it was going to pull through.
Blair then transported the baby deer to a rehabilitation specialist, giving it a real shot at life. Just three days later, the fawn is reportedly doing well and adjusting to its new surroundings.
Tera Shows, spokesperson for the City of Muskogee, praised Blair’s actions.
“Phil is truly an asset to the City of Muskogee. It is clear that he is passionate about his work, and I am truly impressed that he stepped up to this challenge in this way.”
Locals took to social media to share their admiration for Blair. One commenter highlighted another incredible act of kindness, saying, “Philip is an awesome guy. He also went into a burning apartment building and saved my two cats at Broadway Apts a couple years back. How many city or county employees would ever do that?”
