The Western Forest will stretch across Bristol, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, and Somerset, creating at least 2,500 hectares of new woodland and marking the UK’s first new national forest in over 30 years.
Announced by the government, the ambitious project aims to bring nature closer to over 2.5 million residents, including those in urban centers like Bristol, Gloucester, and Swindon. The forest will offer more green spaces for recreation, enhance biodiversity, and help combat climate change.
The Forest of Avon Trust, a charitable organization, will lead the initiative. By 2030, the project aims to establish at least 2,500 hectares of woodland and other tree-rich habitats in five key areas. The effort will also contribute to the government’s target of increasing tree and woodland cover to 16.5% of England by 2050.
"Today, we create a legacy for generations to come," says Nature Minister Mary Creagh.
Once completed, the Western Forest will not only be a vital environmental asset but also a scenic haven for local communities, providing cleaner air, new walking trails, and thriving wildlife habitats.
