The shocking moment was captured on security cameras, showing a massive explosion as lightning obliterated the roof. Heavy rain quickly followed, pouring through the house and leaving the pensioner’s home uninhabitable.
Hayley Johnson, a local resident, witnessed the aftermath and said the woman was in "complete and utter shock." Johnson decided to set up an online fundraiser after the homeowner said: "I don't know what I am going to do, I can't pay for this."
As word spread, local tradespeople and suppliers came together to support the pensioner in her time of need. Roofer Ian Inskip was one of the first to offer his assistance, securing free materials and leading a team of volunteers to replace around 400 roof tiles.
“The elderly woman told me she didn’t have insurance, and that was it—I just wanted to help,” Inskip told Stoke Sentinel. “I’ve always had a soft spot for old people, and if it was my mum, I’d want it all fixed.”
But the generosity didn’t stop there. Electricians and plasterers joined the effort, working for free, while local suppliers donated everything needed to restore the house.
In addition to the labor, kind-hearted local families donated over £4,500 to further aid the restoration. Johnson, who organized the fundraiser, has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support.
“It’s been incredible—I cannot believe the work that has already been done. It’s been a whirlwind of people wanting to help—and being so fast to help!” she said.
Thanks to the combined efforts of this caring community, the elderly woman’s home is well on its way to being restored, offering a heartwarming reminder of the power of kindness and compassion in times of crisis.
