An 87-year-old crossing guard named Beverly Pappas is making a lasting impact on the children she watches over every day.
Last week, as the temperatures soared to nearly triple digits, Pappas decided to go above and beyond her usual duties by passing out ice cream bars to help the kids cool off on their way home from school.

Pappas, who has been a crossing guard in the area for many years, sees her role as more than just ensuring the children’s safety—she believes it’s an opportunity to teach them kindness and compassion.
"You start out with children. Show them how to be good to one another," she told WGN 9.
For Pappas, the greatest reward is knowing that her actions might inspire the kids to carry forward the same spirit of generosity and care in their own lives.
