While traveling to Panama City, Florida, Antonio Usher and his wife, Denica, were involved in a devastating motorcycle crash in Columbus. Denica tragically lost her life at the scene, and Antonio was rushed to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital with severe injuries, including a broken femur, a broken shoulder, and jarred intestines.

The road to recovery was daunting, as Antonio needed to relearn how to walk, talk, and live his life anew.

The EMS team at Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital contacted Antonio’s mother, who fervently requested her son be brought closer to home in Cedartown, Georgia. Antonio was unable to advocate for himself due to his condition.

AdventHealth Redmond EMS Director Marty Robinson, upon learning of Antonio's situation, coordinated with the EMS staff in Columbus. Robinson arranged for his paramedics to transport Antonio back to Cedartown.

Once back in Rome, Antonio spent two months at AdventHealth Redmond, healing from his injuries. But the care and compassion of the AdventHealth team didn’t end there.

Robinson, along with the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit liaison, nurses, director, manager, and other rehab staff, made special arrangements to transport Antonio to his wife’s funeral and gravesite. Paramedics Hobie Altman and Elia Lucas-Vail accompanied Antonio, offering their support during this profoundly emotional time.

"When I was contacted about Mr. Usher’s situation, it was really a no-brainer," Robinson said. "Our mission is to extend the healing ministry of Christ. As part of this mission, Mr. Usher needed our services to help him heal and move toward feeling whole again. It was really a small gesture in light of the tragedy he had suffered. The EMS team was more than willing to do this for him."
