July 30, 2024
Today's good news story comes from Butte County, California.
In the midst of a chaotic evacuation due to a raging wildfire in the remote area above Cohasset near Campbellville, a heartwarming story of bravery and compassion has emerged.
On Wednesday evening, as residents were hurriedly fleeing the encroaching flames, one individual's truck became disabled, forcing them to make the difficult decision to leave behind two adult Rottweilers and their puppies.

The owner, deeply concerned for their pets, provided the responders with the truck's location. However, the area was engulfed in flames, making immediate access impossible.
Undeterred, Trevor Skaggs, a dedicated member of the Butte County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) Search and Rescue team, sprang into action.
Yesterday, Skaggs boarded a BCSO helicopter and flew to the perilous area. Upon landing, he embarked on a grueling 1.5-mile run to reach the stranded animals. When he arrived, he found the mother Rottweiler and her puppies alive but exhausted and extremely thirsty. Heartbreakingly, the puppies’ father had not survived the ordeal.

Demonstrating remarkable resourcefulness, Skaggs shared his water and protein bar with the parched dogs, reviving their spirits. With gentle coaxing, he managed to lead the mother and her five puppies back the 1.5 miles to the helicopter. The courageous team was then flown to safety at the Chico Airport.
The rescued dogs are now under the care of the North Valley Animal Disaster Group, receiving the attention and love they need after their harrowing experience.
"It's been a horrific few days for our community and we are grateful to be able to share this amazing story," Butte County Sheriff's Search & Rescue shared.
