Celebrities And Public Unite For Actress Following Low Turnout At Her Play

August 5, 2023

Celebrities and the general public rallied behind an actress after a disappointing turnout of only one person at her one woman play.

London-based actress Georgie Grier was left in tears after her play "Sunsets" was watched by only one woman at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (EFF) in Scotland on August 3. The EFF is a three-week arts and culture celebration where artists and performers take to hundreds of stages all over the city to present shows for every taste.

"There was one person in my audience today when I performed my one woman play, 'Sunsets' at #edfringe. It's fine, isn't it? It's fine…?" she wrote alongside a tearful selfie.

The tweet received more than 11 million views, prompting an outpouring of support from celebrities, individuals, businesses, and fellow artists.

"We've ALL done it. Soon, you'll dine out on this anecdote," Irish comedian and TV host Dara Ó Briain commented. "More than once I had to buy my audience a drink, as a thank you for being the only ones there. Best thing though, it's all stage time, and the show will get better every single time, ready for the big crowds later!"

The next day, Grier performed to a near-sell out crowd. 32 seats out of the 40 available sold for her afternoon performance.

"I thought I might find a couple of other people who had one person or get some words of comfort," Grier told DailyMail. "I did not expect the level of reaction I've had it's been so lovely, so unexpected, so many words for what I have experienced. I am so appreciative of what I have experienced."
