Kenneth Allen, an attorney at Allen Law Group in Valparaiso, heard many heartbreaking stories and saw tears at the cash registers of his local Meijer store as he greeted the shoppers he was able to help.

Meijer also helped out by giving the shoppers a 10% discount. And there were no restrictions on the items they could purchase with the gift cards.

Allen said he distrubted the $100 gift cards with the help of school officials in School City of Hammond and Portage Township Schools.

Allen said he used to buy gifts and wrap them, but he realized there was a better approach. So Allen now lets them choose what to give their loved ones.

"I'm doing what God put me on the planet to do, is to help people," Allen told The Times.
