Schwarzenegger's donation is in support of the Frontline Responders Fund - a GoFundMe effort to raise money for desperately needed equipment during the Covid-19 crisis.
"Our doctors, nurses and hospital staff are the real action heroes of this crisis. I just play one in the movies. We have an opportunity and a responsibility to provide them with personal protective equipment right now to keep them safe as they fight this virus, so when I heard about Flexport.org’s plan, this was a no-brainer to me," said Arnold Schwarzenegger. "With all of the courageous work they are doing on the frontlines to keep us safe, buying a few hundred thousand masks with a million dollars is the least I can do. Please take a moment to join me in supporting our heroes."
The cause has raised over $5 million to date, including a $1 million donation from Schwarzenegger himself.
Last week, the fundraiser's organizers helped MedShare donate 60,000 surgical masks, 34,000 gloves, 2,000 surgical gowns and 50 thermometers to San Francisco's Department of Public Health.
Through social media, Schwarzenegger is continuing to encourage others to act on their own, volunteer or give to causes that will help give medical staff what they need at this critical time.
"The government can only do so much," he said. "At the end of the day ... it goes back to people power. And 'we the people' have the power to do our share — and just stay home."
