42-Year-Old Zamboni Driver Gets Called In As Emergency Goaltender, Wins First NHL Game
February 23, 2020
David Ayres, a 42 year-old zamboni driver, was called in as an emergency goaltender Saturday night after the starting goalie and backup were both unable to play due to injuries.
Ayres made 8 saves on 10 shots to help lift the Carolina Hurricanes over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
After Carolina goalies James Reimer and Petr Mrazek left because of injuries, the Hurricanes were forced to turn to Ayres, who was watching the game at Scotiabank Arena with his wife.
Ayres entered the game in the middle of the second period. Even though he allowed two goals on the first two shots against, Ayres made the next eight stops to preserve the 6-3 win.
