Steph Curry Releases Shoe Co-Designed By Girl Who Asked Him Why Only Boys Sizes Exist

March 9, 2019

Last November, 9-year-old Riley Morrison wrote a letter to Steph Curry asking why his shoes weren't available in the girls' section at Under Armour.

Five months later, the Curry 6 was released on International Women's Day.

Riley helped design it.

When Riley decided to write Curry a letter, she had no idea that he would write her back.

"I was immediately impressed when I saw Riley's letter," Curry said. "That a nine-year-old girl had the courage to use her voice to call attention to an issue and keep us accountable." steph curry responds to girl letter shoes

Curry also asked Riley to design the sock liner.

Riley's design includes drawings of girls playing basketball and encouraging messages that read: "Rock the Currys", "Girl Power" and "Be Bold".

"It's been amazing. It's a really special experience. I never imagined that this would happen," Riley said Thursday at a pop-up shop in Oakland where Curry surprised her with her own pair of the new sneakers. "I'm really happy I wrote that letter."

Under Armour has also announced that proceeds from sales of the shoe will fund an annual $30,000 college scholarship.

Vivian Wu, a high-school senior from Oakland with a 4.2 grade-point average, is the first scholarship recipient.

Wu, Morrison and Curry met during a brief halftime ceremony Friday night to formally announce the scholarship.

"Just a reminder that one small gesture can lead to something truly special," Curry wrote on Instagram. "From a handwritten note to a $30k scholarship for Vivian Wu to pursue higher education in STEM. Riley Morrison changed the game."
