A Young Boy Begged His Mom To Let Him Die, And His Reason Broke My Heart
May 21, 2015
Zhou Lu and her son Chen Xiaotian were a very happy family, but at only five years old, tragedy struck. Doctors diagnosed little Chen with a malignant brain tumor.
Doctors said he wouldn't make it to adulthood.
His mother had difficulty adjusting to the news, and only months later, she was diagnosed with kidney disease.
The two battled side-by-side in the hospital for years. Zhou required dialysis, while Chen needed around-the-clock care.
Chen's tumor eventually pressed against his optic nerve and he became blind; he also became bedridden.
The doctors couldn't do anything to save Chen, but Zhou could recover with a new kidney. It was her only hope.
"They told me that my grandson would not survive," she told Daily Mail, "but his kidneys could help his mother, and also save two other lives as well."
Zhou refused. "She absolutely didn't want to hear any talk of that happening," her mother said.
When Chen overheard his mother's dilemma, he confronted his mother and demanded that he be allowed to save her life.
"Mom, I want to save your life," he begged.
She finally agreed and decided "if her son was to die, her only consolation was that part of him would live on in her."
Days later, little Chen passed away.
The doctors bowed to him and said a prayer before moving on with the organ transplant to show their respect for such a brave young boy.
The transplant was successful, but Zhou wasn't the only one rescued by his selfless act.
His other kidney went to a 21 year-old girl and his liver was given to a 27 year-old man.
Thanks to this brave little boy, three lives were saved and forever changed.
