A Pigeon Distraction
By jennifer • September 8, 2026
This afternoon, I noticed a young child (maybe 3 years old) struggling to listen to her mum's requests at my local shopping centre.
I stopped and had a chat with her about listening to mum but I soon realised that it was the wrong track to take, and with the help of a pigeon that was walking in the shopping centre, I was able to distract her.
I suggested the bird was going to buy a donut, or get its feathers done. She thought the whole idea of the bird being in the shopping centre rather amusing and said it should be in a tree (I agreed!).
After 2-3 minutes, she was happy to climb into her pram and we decided that the bird had gone to the cafe for a coffee and strawberry donut.
Her mum was incredibly grateful as it gave her a chance to take a breath.
And for once, I was grateful for the pigeons walking in the shopping centre.
