A Box Of Breakfast
By leann freedom • July 28, 2026
Just before starting 6th grade I had to move across the country and start at a new school.
My parents went through a nasty divorce and my mom got diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly thereafter. She was working 3 jobs while renting a room for me and my sister. We shared the tiny space, the 3 of us in my godmothers home.
I was so nervous about starting a new school and making friends. I had no idea my mom's condition at the time, I just understood something was going on with her health and she wanted to work a lot to provide for what was left of our family.
One day she came to my school first thing in the morning and delivered a box of 26 sausage biscuits. They were in a cardboard box for some McDonald's food supplies.
The school I went to was in a middle/low income neighborhood. All the kids were so excited to have that sausage biscuit for breakfast.
After that everyone started to remember my name and ask me more about my mom and where I was from. She put me on the map in that classroom and delivered to me love in a Mickey D's box.
She also beat the brain tumor with an experimental drug trial and ended up living a couple more decades :)
