A woman wrote me recently and asked me if I believe in angels. I answered: “Yes I do. I see them all the time. You just have to know how to look for them.”

Let me give you an example. A few years ago during a bad patch of weather in the middle of winter I found myself sitting in my car in the parking lot waiting for my daughter to finish her grocery shopping. I looked out my window and saw an elderly man struggling to walk across the icy asphalt. He had a hat pulled down over his head against the bitter, winter wind and a cane in one hand. I thought for a second that I should get out of my car and help him make it into the store, but then something miraculous happened.

Suddenly as the old man was going by a woman loading a huge bag of dog food into her trunk, she slipped on the ice. I thought she would hit the asphalt but the elderly man caught her with his free arm and steadied her. Then he grabbed one end of the big, heavy bag and helped her load it into her trunk. She smiled and thanked him. He smiled back and tipped his hat to her and I wondered if that hat was pulled down low so as to hide the halo underneath it. Then he straightened himself and walked into the store with a steadier step than before. I could see too a happiness in his stride that I didn’t see earlier. I think it came from the joy his kindness brought him by being an angel to another.

Aesop said: “No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.” I agree. Each act of kindness is precious. Each act of kindness is priceless. Each act of kindness shares our love and joy and connects us with Our Father in Heaven. Each act of kindness, goodness, and love we share brings out the inner angel that lives within us all. Yes, I do believe in angels both seen and unseen. And I believe that each of us can be an angel in this world if we choose.
