Friends Gave an Airline Ticket Agent One Year's Salary So She Could Follow Her Dream. She Wrote To Kill a Mockingbird.

Sometimes the greatest gift is simply believing in someone before the rest of the world does.

In 1956, two friends gave an aspiring writer an entire year's salary so she could focus on her dream. That writer was Harper Lee, and the book she wrote during that year would become one of the most beloved novels of all time.

Before To Kill a Mockingbird became a literary classic, Harper Lee was juggling her passion for writing with a full time job as a ticket agent for British Overseas Airways Corporation in New York City.

Like many aspiring authors, she struggled to find enough time and energy to write after work. She shared her frustrations with close friends Michael and Joy Brown, who believed her talent deserved a chance.

The Browns were part of an impressive literary circle that included author Truman Capote. Michael Brown had found considerable success writing industrial musicals for major American companies like DuPont and JC Penney, creating productions designed to motivate employees. After a particularly successful year, he and Joy decided there was something far more meaningful they could do with their money.

On Christmas morning in 1956, Harper Lee found an envelope waiting for her on the tree.

Inside was a note that would change her life.

"You have one year off from your job to write whatever you please. Merry Christmas."

Lee later recalled the unforgettable moment in a 1961 essay for McCall's magazine.

"They assured me that it was not some sort of joke. They'd had a good year, they said. They'd saved some money and thought it was high time they did something about me."

Freed from the pressure of earning a paycheck, Lee devoted herself to writing.

The manuscript she completed during that extraordinary year became To Kill a Mockingbird.

Published in 1960, the novel went on to sell more than 30 million copies worldwide, earned the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and has inspired generations of readers with its timeless messages about courage, compassion, and justice.

It's impossible to know what would have happened if the Browns had not stepped in. But one act of generosity gave a talented writer the freedom to create, and the result became one of the most influential books ever written.

Their Christmas gift was much more than financial support.

It was faith in a friend.

And thanks to that belief, millions of people around the world have been touched by a story that might never have existed.
