Meet Odin: The Baby Reindeer Born During A Thunderstorm

April 8, 2026

A tiny new life has arrived at a New York farm and he’s already stealing hearts.

At Shortsville Reindeer Farm, a baby reindeer named Odin made his debut in the most dramatic way possible, born during a thunderstorm on March 31.

Despite the stormy entrance, his story since then has been nothing but warm and wonderful.

“We have a new member in the herd! Son of Bronco and Boo, meet Odin,” the farm shared, along with a series of heart-melting photos taken just moments after his birth.

Like any newborn, Odin needed a little time to get his footing—literally. But it didn’t take long for things to fall into place.

“It took a couple days for the mom and calf to get the system down,” said Mike Schaertl, who owns the farm with his wife Lisa. “But now that the calf is steady on his feet and mom knows what to do, we can leave them alone.”

And now? Odin is doing exactly what a healthy, happy baby reindeer should be doing—running, growing, and exploring his new world.

A video shared by the farm shows the tiny calf trotting around with surprising confidence, already gaining weight and energy with each passing day.

And perhaps the sweetest part of all: his mom is doing a great job.

“Mom has been a good mom,” Schaertl said.

With eight reindeer now calling the farm home, Odin is the newest little star of the herd—and a perfect reminder that even during life’s stormiest moments, something beautiful can be born.
