Father Honors Son With Powerful Memorial Showing Him 'Free of His Earthly Burdens'

At the Salt Lake City Cemetery, a remarkable sculpture quietly tells a story of love, faith, and hope.

The memorial honors Matthew Stanford Robison, a boy born on September 23, 1988, in Salt Lake City. Matthew entered the world with severe disabilities caused by oxygen deprivation at birth. He was blind, mostly paralyzed from the neck down, and unable to speak.

But Matthew’s life became a powerful reminder that even the briefest lives can leave the deepest impact.

Surrounded by the unwavering love of his family and friends, Matthew lived for more than ten years, passing peacefully in his sleep on February 21, 1999. Those who knew him described him as a constant source of joy and inspiration.

“Matthew was a joy and inspiration to all who were privileged to know him,” his obituary reads. “He came into this world as a miracle and left this world as a miracle.”

Wanting to honor his son in a meaningful way, Matthew’s father, Ernest Robison—a biomedical engineer and artist—designed a memorial unlike any other. Completed in 2000, the bronze sculpture depicts Matthew rising from his wheelchair, stepping forward with his arms lifted toward the sky.

The powerful image represents Matthew finally free from the physical burdens he carried during his life on earth.

The memorial symbolizes peace, healing, and the belief that beyond this life there is freedom from pain and suffering. For visitors who encounter the statue, the message is unmistakable: the human spirit is far greater than any earthly limitation.

Inscribed are words that capture the family’s faith and hope:

“With their legacy complete in love, they return home again to God. To behold His face and be wholly healed in joy forever more.”

More than two decades later, Matthew’s memorial continues to touch the hearts of those who see it. What began as a father’s tribute to his beloved son has become a lasting symbol of resilience, love, and the promise that no life—no matter how short or difficult—is without purpose.

And in the quiet stillness of the cemetery, Matthew’s story continues to lift spirits, reminding visitors that some souls walk especially close in the hands of God.
