She Could Have Kept Walking. Instead, She Stopped And Saved A Life
January 22, 2026
For one woman, a quiet walk in the neighborhood turned into a life-saving mission.
All was calm… until a faint sound cut through the quiet. At first, she thought she imagined it—a soft whimper, almost too quiet to notice. But then it came again, clearer this time: a small, panicked cry. Her heart skipped a beat. She stopped in her tracks. Something was wrong. A dog was in trouble.
She scanned nearby yards, fences, and sidewalks—and then realized the cries were coming from below. Leaning over a storm drain, at the bottom in the dim shadows below the street, sat a dog, wide-eyed, trembling, and desperately hoping someone would hear her.

Without hesitation, she called Animal Law Enforcement for help.
Corporal Rollins arrived quickly, assessing the situation. The drain was too narrow for a simple rescue, and the space below was shallow, making it impossible to climb in safely. Then Rollins noticed a nearby manhole cover. Lifting it revealed a dark tunnel, and almost immediately, the dog cautiously walked toward the light, as if sensing that help had arrived.
Officer Moore soon joined Rollins, and together they formed a careful plan. With patience, calm voices, and treats in hand, Rollins climbed down and slowly earned the dog’s trust. Dirty, scared, but unharmed, she finally allowed herself to be secured and lifted safely out of the tunnel.

The frightened pup, named Kita, was brought to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.
Her photo was quickly posted, and almost immediately her family recognized her. They rushed to the shelter, overjoyed to be reunited with their beloved dog the very same day. Before leaving, they made the responsible choice to microchip her, ensuring she could always find her way home in the future.
Another life saved. Another happy tail home where she belongs.
