Six Brave Cows Escaped a Slaughterhouse—Now They're Healing People

September 5, 2024

Seven years ago, six brave cows made a daring escape from a St. Louis slaughterhouse, capturing the attention of the city.

Their story, however, took an unexpected and heartwarming turn when, instead of returning to their fate, they were taken to The Gentle Barn, a rescue center for farm animals.

Now, they spend their days giving back, offering healing hugs to those in need of comfort.

Founded in 1999 by Ellie Laks, The Gentle Barn was a childhood dream come true.

Laks' vision began with a rescued miniature Hereford cow named Buddha, who gave her comfort during a difficult time. One evening Buddha wrapped her neck around an exhausted and upset Laks and transferred a singular form of healing and comfort with an incredible impact.

This led to the creation of Cow Hug Therapy, a revolutionary approach to emotional healing for those dealing with trauma, illness, grief, addiction, and stress.

"Cow hugs are proven to be beneficial to both humans and cows. They reduce stress in a tranquil environment and encourage a state of mindfulness" ~ The Gentle Barn

Visitors now flock to The Gentle Barn’s three locations in California, Nashville, and St. Louis to experience the power of cow hugs.

"I think that when we put our faces against the cows it mimics being an infant with a caregiver. We feel vulnerable and small. We feel protected and loved, it's magical," said Laks.

Laks says she has witnessed countless lives changed at The Gentle Barn.

"When you feel that connection with those cows, it does something," said Laks.

The Gentle Barn has rescued thousands of animals and welcomed over 950,000 visitors. To learn more or find a location near you, visit their website.
