Tornado Disrupts Wedding, Sends Guests To Basement. They Turned It Into A Magical Night
July 24, 2024
Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs, and sometimes, those unexpected twists create the most unforgettable moments.
This was certainly the case for Alex Schilke and Sarah Hipke, whose wedding day took an extraordinary turn due to a tornado in Lake Geneva.

As the storm raged outside, the wedding party was forced to seek refuge in the basement of their hotel, where a family reunion was coincidentally taking place. With no electricity and the threat of the tornado looming, it seemed their special day might be marred by the chaos.
But fate had other plans.
In the midst of this unforeseen turn of events, a beacon of hope emerged. Jack Jones, a guitarist/singer attending the family reunion, saw an opportunity to salvage the moment. In his own words:
"A tornado in Lake Geneva brought a wedding party into the basement of the hotel where our family reunion was happening! They hadn’t had their first dance yet and I happened to have my guitar. The power was out so everyone put up their flashlights and we tried to give the bride and groom a special moment. I’m extremely grateful I was able to sub in to sing and congratulations to the happy couple!"
It was a magical moment that no one in that basement would ever forget. The groom, Alex, later reflected on the experience:
"Groom here! @Sarah Hipke couldn’t have imagined that our first dance would end up going like this but we wouldn’t change a single thing about it! Thank you to everyone for making it so magical!"
