Truck drivers join Operation Roger to transport abandoned animals to caring families
April 27, 2013
Former truck driver and animal lover, Sue Wiese, founded Operation Roger to save and transport abandoned animals to families willing to adopt them.
The idea for this non-profit came to her during Hurricane Katrina. One night while driving she prayed for the stranded animals who survived the devastating storm.
She says she remembered saying, "Lord, I am just a truck driver, is there anything I can do to help?"
She called into an XM talk radio show and explained her idea live on the air, hoping for support and volunteer drivers. By the end of the show, she had nearly a dozen volunteers. Now, there are over 50 drivers who participate transporting animals to caring families.
Operation Roger has two coordinators that locate drivers who will be traveling near the pet's destination home.
Binz, a volunteer for the group, has transported nine dogs and one cat since he joined Operation Roger.
"It's a good way that truck drivers in America can give back to society because we're not home a lot," he said. "We can't do a lot of volunteer projects, but this is something that we can do."
Most of these animals are coming from very bad situations. With the help of Operation Roger, more and more animals every year are being rescued.
