Most People Know The Story, But Very Few Know Why It Was Written. Oh, And Here's The Original Manuscript

In 1939, a manager at Montgomery Ward thought the store should create its own children's book for the annual holiday promotion. He contacted Robert L. May, an ad man for the department store, to come up with a story.

May, at 35 years old, felt he had never reached his full potential and did some of his own soul searching before writing the story we all know and love about an outcast reindeer who saved Christmas.

"Can't you come up with anything better?" the manager asked, according to May's story in the Gettysburg Times.
