This Rare Orchid Discovered In Colombia Has A Terrifying Devil Head At The Center

July 17, 2016

Researchers in Colombia have discovered a lone and unique population of orchids that grow on a small patch of land in Colombia. However, its small habitat (about 30) is far from the only striking thing about the newly discovered species.

A closer look into the center of the flower reveals what appears to be a devil/demonic head. The researches even decided to name it Telipogon diabolicus after its sinister pattern. The name diabolicus refers to the way its maroon gynostemium looks like the head of the devil.

Apart from the demon's head at the heart, the petals themselves are characteristically clawed, a feature not found in any of its close relatives.
