Doctors at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center delivered Melissa Carleton's son, West Nathaniel Lande, by C-section while the first-time Fresno mom was still in a coma due to a benign tumor in her brain during her second trimester.
Melissa wanted to put off brain surgery until after her son was born, but when she had a seizure in March, she was rushed into the operating room. Doctors successfully removed the mass, but the seizure left the 39-year-old in a coma. She hasn't been fully conscious since March 11.
Melissa's husband, Brian, has been by her side ever since. He said that sometimes she opens her eyes and holds his hand.

Carleton's mom, Lawanna Farrell, said she thinks her daughter knows her baby has finally arrived.
"She was more awake than she has been," she told the Fresno Bee. "She reached for Brian and puckered her lips so she could kiss him."
Brian also believes Melissa knows she's a mother. "She did wake up a little bit when he came in the room and first cried," he said. "And Melissa and baby were face-to-face, and her eyes were open."
