Terminally-ill Teenager Raises Over $5 Million During His Final Days. His Goal Was Only $10,000

May 15, 2014

The terminally-ill teenager whose inspirational fundraising mission went viral last week has now raised more than £3 million (5 million US dollars).

19-year-old Stephen Sutton, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer three years ago, had originally hoped to raise £10,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

But after he posted an emotional farewell message to followers of his Facebook page Stephen's Story, support flooded in across social media platforms, with celebrities such as Clare Balding, Jason Mannford and Piers Morgan all encouraging people to donate to the cause.

Writing from his hospital bed this past Monday, Sutton thanked those who had helped reach the charity milestone.

"One week ago I posted a thumbs up farewell photo that went viral. As mentioned, at that point I genuinely thought I was a goner, but one week on I'm still here!

To celebrate still being here after this crazy week, to celebrate this wonderful journey called life, and to celebrate being part of raising over £3 million for Teenage Cancer Trust. Here's a huge thumbs up from me!"

But on Wednesday, May 14th, 2014, Stephen's journey finally came to an end. His mom left this heartfelt message for the millions of fans he inspired with his story and positive outlook on life:

My heart is bursting with pride but breaking with pain for my courageous, selfless, inspirational son who passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 14th May. The ongoing support and outpouring of love for Stephen will help greatly at this difficult time, in the same way as it helped Stephen throughout his journey. We all know he will never be forgotten, his spirit will live on, in all that he achieved and shared with so many.

Love,
His mom x
