New York bus driver catches girl falling from tall building

July 20, 2012

New York city bus driver, Stephen St. Bernard, saved a 7 year-old girl from falling to her death after she slipped through a window in an apartment building 3 stories high.

Bernard happened to be in the right place at the right time. Walking home from work in Brooklyn, New York, he noticed a little girl was standing outside a housing complex on an air conditioning window unit 3 stories high. Realizing she was all alone and seemingly unaware of the dangerous situation, Bernard knew he had to do something.

Bernard began yelling up to the girl to please go back inside through the window. Several minutes after attempting to convince her, she slipped and began her descent to the awaiting city streets.

"Please let me catch her, please let me catch her. That's all I could say," recalled Bernard. He told reporters that all he could do was pray.

The 7 year-old fell into his arms and never hit the ground. Bernard saved her from an impact that could have easily resulted in death.

"I picked her up and carried her. She kept looking around. She never closed her eyes. She never lost consciousness," he said.

The little girl was taken to a local hospital for minor impact injuries. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Bernard is being celebrated as a hero by all who witnessed the event, and now by those who get to read this news story. Another example of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
