This Couple Moved Off The Grid And Built A Self-Sustaining Floating Island
April 29, 2015
A Canadian couple ditched the hustle and bustle of city life to live on a colorful floating island they've named Freedom Cove.
In 1992, Wayne Adams and Catherine King began building their floating home about half an hour by boat off the coast of Tofino, British Columbia. Today that home has expanded to encompass 12 large platforms covered by living spaces, green houses, lush gardens and plenty of docks to tie up boats and kayaks.
The couple and their two children live off the grid, collecting rainwater for drinking in the winter months and freshwater from a local waterfall in the summer.
Electricity comes from solar panels on the roof, while much of their fruit and vegetables come from the greenhouses and planters that dot the utopian island.
When they aren’t working on their ever expanding island or nurturing the gardens on its decks, both Adams and King are artists. They make carvings from fossilised ivory, mammoth tusk and wood, selling their work at shops and museums across British Columbia.
King and Adams love visitors and give tours of the home to those who want to learn about their journey to self-sufficiency. Watch the video below:
