It's Now Illegal To Declaw A Cat In Denver

November 20, 2017

A bill proposing to ban the declawing of cats was passed unanimously by the Denver City Council this week.

This makes Denver the first U.S. city outside California to ban the inhumane procedure that is painful to felines.

Declawing is a surgical procedure that removes the top third of a cat's claws. The procedure consists of removing all or the majority of the last bone of each of the ten toes in a cat's front paws. The tendons, nerves and ligaments which provide normal functioning for a cat's paw are often completely severed.

Once a more common veterinary procedure recommended to indoor cat owners, declawing is now frequently compared to cutting off the tip of a human finger down to the last knuckle.

While critics worry that the action could result in people surrendering more cats to shelters, supporters note that California cities who have similar legislation in place have not seen spikes in cat intakes at shelters.

Declawing a cat is illegal in the UK, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand.
