This New Kickstarter Campaign May Put An End To Kitty Litter
February 3, 2015
Of the roughly 30 million households in the US that own cats, all of them want to make caring for their cat easier. No one likes the smell, the hassle, or the grossness at the bottom of the litter box. Nearly all of them also use clay kitty litter, which is about as effective and archaic as the guillotine or the incandescent light bulb.
The light bulb - a universal symbol for innovation; it has come under fire in recent years in enlightened countries like the US, the EU, Switzerland, Brazil and Venezuela, because of its inefficiency.
Clay kitty litter may not be far behind.
The incandescent light bulb has been around since the late 1800's. Americans remember that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, and although he helped push the technology along, he was actually note the sole inventor, just the first one to market it with wide success. The rest was history. Light bulbs changed everything from education standards to circadian rhythm – we now eat more, sleep more, learn more and produce more than ever before.
But starting January 1st of 2014, the incandescent light bulb can no longer be manufactured in the US because it doesn't meet federal energy efficiency standards. Eventually, it will get harder and harder to purchase incandescent bulbs. It's a case of macro-economics trimming down the fat on an aged technology, and making room for Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) which are more efficient emerging technologies.
There is a similar revolution gaining traction on Kickstarter. TACKL Technologies is launching an all-natural, compostable, flushable kitty litter that is made form 98% bio-preferred material and leaves a neutral carbon footprint. TACKL Kitty Litter is 3 times more absorbent than normal clumping litter and minimizes the mess and consequently the smell from feline maintenance.
"It outperforms clay on an order of magnitude that will make clay obsolete one day," says Ken Harshbarger, Product Development for TACKL Technologies. "People will eventually refuse to pay more for a tired, lazy product that just doesn't work, and eventually clay litter will be legislated out of existence."
