If You Use An ATM Card, You Need To See This

October 29, 2014

Reddit user Wujubird went to use the ATM and noticed something was a little off. He took these pictures to help others know how to detect a card skimmer.

Why is the card slot sticking out so far?

Notice the cracks underneath the receipt slot.

The headphone socket sunk in and was off alignment.

The whole sketchy panel.

It looks like somebody pried up the whole front panel and replaced it with a fake one. They cracked the piece under the receipt slot when they did it, and didn't get the headphone socket right.

This is what the front panel is supposed to look like.

The card slot is inset, not sticking out.

Clear button is black, not yellow, and has a vertical bar.

A view of the section that was sticking out from the card slot.

It's a little hard to make out in the photo, but there is obviously a lens looking down from the upper part. It would be able to read the number from your card as you inserted it.

If your ATM has a protuding card slot, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a card skimmer. Some banks are doing this to prevent skimmers.

Hopefully this post helps. People tell you about card skimmers but rarely tell you what to look for!
