Sleep Paralysis Victim Turns His Traumatic Experiences Into Hauntingly Surreal Photographs

February 23, 2014

If you have experienced sleep paralysis you know how terrifying it can be. You are awake, but you can not move. No matter how hard you try to yell for help, your voice is silent. It occurs between wakefulness and rest, characterized by complete muscle weakness and is often associated with terrifying visions.

Photographer Nicolas Bruno has been haunted by this phenomenon since he was 15 years old. He discovered that transposing his visions into photo shoots provides him with a powerful therapeutic outlet.

He began writing his experiences down in a journal so he could re-create them...

Gas masks, bowler hats, lanterns, and an assortment of other odd props have become the trademarks of his work.
