You Can Use Duct Tape To Remove Your Warts. It's More Effective Than Freezing Them Off

December 28, 2015

One of the most common methods of wart removal is to freeze them off using liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy). But apparently there's a DIY method that, according to this study, works even better: covering them with duct tape.

duct tape to remove warts

The study was initially published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, and comprised a group of 51 patients between the ages of 3-22 years of age. One group received liquid nitrogen treatment for six treatment cycles, each cycle lasting two to three weeks. The second group was given the duct tape treatment.

Those in the "duct tape group" — or their parents — were told to leave the tape on for six days, and to replace it if it fell off. After six days, they were told to remove the tape, soak the area in water, and rub the wart with an emery board or pumice stone. After 12 hours without the duct tape, they were told to put a new piece on the wart, and continue the cycle for two months or until the wart was gone.

The Results

Of the 51 patients completing the study, 26 (51%) were treated with duct tape, and 25 (49%) were treated with cryotherapy. Twenty-two patients (85%) in the duct tape group vs 15 patients (60%) enrolled in the cryotherapy group had complete resolution of their warts. The majority of warts that responded to either therapy did so within the first month of treatment.

Conclusion

Duct tape occlusion therapy was significantly more effective than cryotherapy for treatment of the common wart.
